A collection of marine fishes from Angola, with notes on new distribution records OceanDocs

Collections of fishes from demersal trawl surveys to 800 m depth off the Angolan coast in 2001, 2002 and 2005 resulted in several range extensions tabulated here. Specimens of species poorly represented in previous collections allowed improved diagnoses of Myxine ios, Torpedo bauchotae, Dysommina rugosa, Pisodonophis semicinctus, Xenomystax congroides, Lestidiops cadenati, Ophidion lozanoi, Cataetyx bruuni, Dibranchus atlanticus, Diceratias pileatus, Himantolophus paucifilosus, Neomerinthe folgori, Careproctus albescens, Paracaristius maderensis and Pachycara crossacanthum. All specimens accessioned into the Fish Collection of the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity are listed and colour plates show a selection of species from the trawl catches

A transboundary study of the pelagic fish stocks of southern OceanDocs

The main object of this study is to develop a big vertical opening bottom trawl (GOV) adapted to the Tunisian fisheries. Two models of trawls were tested. One for a trawler with 600 horse power engine and another model for a trawler with 900 horse power engine. The obtained results in this study show that the two models of trawls tested are efficient, especially in the areas where we found benthic and pelagic species together. Further more, the yield of these trawls is higher than that of the shrimp’s trawl, the most gear used in Tunisian water.

Evaluation of the Status of the Namibian Hake Resource (Merluccius spp.) Using Statistical Catch-at-Age Analysis OceanDocs

Namibian hake is the most important fish resource in Namibia. This monograph is a compilation of all the hake data, historic and recent, that has been used to inform stock assessment and management since the late 1970s. It presents the statistical catch-at-age analysis used to evaluate the state of the Namibian hake resource under different assumptions. This analysis treats the two hakes, Merluccius paradoxus and M. capensis, as a single stock. The data and modeling show that the stock has not as yet recovered to its maximum sustainable yield level, despite foreign fishing effort having been removed in 1990. Best estimates suggest the current stock to be roughly 20% of pre-exploitation levels; however this figure is sensitive to model assumptions. Signs...

Seasonal and Long-Term Changes in the Distribution and Abundance of Demersal Fishery Resources in Continental Shelf Waters off Ghana, West Africa OceanDocs

Between 1963 and 1990, the abundance of demersal fishery resources in Ghana’s shelf waters underwent significant changes whereby the relative importance of major species changed in every trawl survey conducted in the area. Triggerfish (Balistes capriscus) dominated this ecosystem for nearly twenty years (from early 1970s to late 1980s) displacing bigeye grunt (Brachydeuterus auritus) as the most abundant species.The density of all demersal species (excluding triggerfish) assessed in bottom trawl surveys decreased from 50 kg ha-1 in 1963-64 to 32.4 kg ha-1 in 1990.
